Used Books


Used books are books that are sold second hand. These are pre-owned books that are sold on by their owners when they no longer need or want to hang on to them. Even books that have never been opened but that are then sold on will be referred to as used, although these may be given the description of being ‘as new’.

People buy used books for various reasons. Book collectors, for example, may well spend much of their time buying second hand books to build their collections. Some collectors may collect books on a general basis but many will have areas of specialisation. So, for example, a collector may collect first editions of detective novels and another may collect science fiction books from the 1950s.

It is also quite common to simply buy used books as an alternative to buying new. In some cases a consumer may have to buy second hand. If they wanted a book that was out of print or extremely hard to get hold of, then their best option may well be to buy a used version.

Lots of people will, however, simply keep their eye out for used books that save them some money. Buying new books all the time can work out to be expensive. Buying books second hand may simply be much cheaper. Even used books that are sold in an as new condition will cost a lot less than new versions.
