Used Books
Used books are books that are sold second hand. These are pre-owned books that are sold on by their owners when they no longer need or want to hang on to them. Even books that have never been opened but that are then sold on will be referred to as used, although these may be given the description of being ‘as new’.
People buy used books for various reasons. Book collectors, for example, may well spend much of their time buying second hand books to build their collections. Some collectors may collect books on a general basis but many will have areas of specialisation. So, for example, a collector may collect first editions of detective novels and another may collect science fiction books from the 1950s.
It is also quite common to simply buy used books as an alternative to buying new. In some cases a consumer may have to buy second hand. If they wanted a book that was out of print or extremely hard to get hold of, then their best option may well be to buy a used version.
Lots of people will, however, simply keep their eye out for used books that save them some money. Buying new books all the time can work out to be expensive. Buying books second hand may simply be much cheaper. Even used books that are sold in an as new condition will cost a lot less than new versions.
There are many different ways to find used books. These include:
- Second hand book shops/websites -- these online and offsite stores may sell a mix of new books and used books or they may solely specialise in the second hand sector. Some shops will sell all kinds of books here whilst others may specialise in particular subjects/types of books. Many online books stores also give their customers the chance to sell their used books on site.
- Online auctions/book sites -- most online auction sites will have a booming used book section. People really can pick up some bargains here.
- Charity shops -- the majority of charity shops will have at least a couple of shelves of used books. Some charities, such as Oxfam, also have specialist used book stores that only sell books and other entertainment products such as music and DVDs.
Buying used books can be a lot of fun. Not only do you get the chance to save some cash by finding a bargain you also can’t beat the excitement of finding a book you’ve been looking for for ages!
